Cover Gray Hair
by Brenda
July 2007
Hi Joy,
When I used the henna, I put about 3-4 teaspoons in a little water and simmered it just a little. After this I let it cool down and smeared it all over my wet hair, left it on for an hour or two (went outside), and then rinsed it out. I washed my hair with shampoo the next day. The henna covered my gray strands (I do not use hair coloring because gray hair is a crown of glory as our sons quote from the Bible), so this was surprising along with my hair looking healthier. I am not sure how often you need to do this so let me know if you hear from others' suggestions.
Thank you and my God bless us in helping each other stay healthy.

Hi Brenda,
You didn't really say what color the gray hair turned after your henna treatment or what color is your natural color? I have very dark hair with really white (gray) strands throughout. Just wondered if turns a flaming orange color or what?
Thanks,
Suz

I have light ash brown/blond hair with quite a bit of grey now. I used straight henna, in lemon juice per hennaforhair.com, in December 2009. I've since touched up the roots twice (July '09). Yes, the grey hair turned a "flaming orange" at first, and then "mellowed" a bit to blend in with the red that the rest of the hair is. I recommend checking out the site I mentioned before doing your hair w/ straight henna. You might be happier with a henna-indigo blend.

I have mostly white hair, but still good bit of dark brown scattered through the back/sides. The product that works best for me (also from Henna for Hair which offers the BEST quality) is plain Cassia Obovata, since I don't want any red. The end product is grey hair turned a lovely pale blonde, while lending a healthy sheen to the dark hair, without no change of color. No orange, because it's not henna (but another plant with similar properties.) Cassia also darkens just a bit over time. I also prepare it with lemon juice, but no need to simmer - let stand for 12hrs (70 degrees at the coolest. I set the glass container on a heating pad/low setting keep skin forming with plastic wrap, airtight with a lid.) Apply per website, I leave it on overnight but a couple hours is supposed to do it. Freeze leftovers for next or root application.
