Excerpts from the book Practical Herbalism

In more recent times, one of Mullein’s greatest advocates was Dr. John Christopher of The School of Natural Healing. He states, “It is the only herb known to man that has remarkable narcotic properties without being poisonous or harmful. It is a great herbal painkiller and nervous soporific, calming and quieting all inflamed and irritated nerves. In wasting diseases (such as tuberculosis or consumption), the weight steadily increases, expectoration becomes easy, cough calms, and the general condition is improved. Mullein soothes and strengthens the bowels and renal system, and is one of the most important for the glands and serous and mucous membranes. It stops the escape of fluids from ruptured vessels, and eliminates toxins.”

Mullein’s gentle nature makes it one of the very best herbs for use with children’s health problems. It combines wonderfully with Chamomile, Catnip, and Lemon Balm where appropriate, and can be used to address a wide variety of childhood diseases.

Excerpts from the book Nutritional Herbology

Mullein has a folk history of use that focuses on respiratory ailments. It has traditionally been used to treat coughs, colds, croup, bronchitis, and asthma. Because of its soothing nature, it has also been used to treat hemorrhoids, ulcers, and inflammatory skin disorders. The flowers and seeds contain an essential oil used to treat earaches. Mullein is considered the herb of choice of lung ailments.

Contain mucilaginous compounds that decrease the thickness and increase the production of mucosal fluids. These compounds also soothe inflamed tissues. Mullein also contains aromatic compounds that increase the flow of urine. The herb has been used to treat bronchitis, coughs, colds, hay fever, dysuria, nephritis and sinus congestion.

From Our Reading and/or Experience...

  • We use Mullein in tea and tincture combinations. Of course, it can be used in many other types of remedies.
  • We specially like it in teas because of its very pleasant flavor. However, be sure to strain it properly to remove the potentially irritating hair-like particles.
  • Mullein can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing), children and animals.
  • It can be used as often as you would like, and in any way you choose.
  • As is the case with most herbs, Mullein should be stored in a dark, dry, and cool place.

There are two kinds of earache I know about. Inner ear infection and swimmers ear. My children, now adults, had both. Does this heal the infection or ease the pain of the infection?

I asked my doctor if I could find an herb that would help my lungs before he prescribes another inhaler. I had an allergic reation to an inhaler he had me using. He was ok with what I asked. This has been a miracle tea for me. I drink 3 cups a day. When it's warm I make iced tea. I've mixed it with other herb teas for different flavor or the herb benefit. It's great. I'll wake in the morning and feel the congestion. It's gone after the first cup. After lunch and dinner is when I drink the other two. I have an inhaler I use at bedtime that I plan on stopping. My doctor's appointment is in January 2009. I'm under his authority and I want him to see how I am doing before I stop using the inhaler.

I hope you get this comment because I am in desperate need of an anti inflammatory and anti congestion remedy for asthma without having to rely on prednisone all the time...I began an alternative remedy 3 weeks ago taking massive quantities of alfalfa, omega 3 capsules, beta carotene, b complex, flavanoids, cordyceps, ginseng, quercitin, etc, etc, while slowly reducing and eliminating, which worked for about 3 weeks then this week, something set me off again, maybe lots of pollen in the air, I don't know...but my chest is all congested again and wheezing. Please let me know how much of this mullein herb you used per cup of tea and if you used anything else to help remedy the congestion. thanks so much!

Aside from diet and exercise, there are some herbs that are very baefeicinl for Blood Pressure. The most popular ones are Fish Oil, Hawthorn Berries, L-Arginine, C12 Peptides (from milk protein casein), Bonito Peptides, and Garlic. As far as Blood Sugar, you can try one of several herbs but if you have full-out Diabetes, you should check with a naturopath or other natural doctor. The reason is because when you're dealing with something as severe as Diabetes, then too much support can be just as bad or worse than too little support. I can give you a few ideas of where to start looking, but a doctor is your better choice. Good luck!

I read your comment that mullein has helped your horse. Can you tell me how you used it, and the dosage used.
Thanks.

I make a mullein tincture and keep it on hand. My husband is a general contractor and breathes in many different chemicals. This opens up his breathing. He used to use an inhaler, but has replaced it with this. It is easy for him to keep the tincture in his work bag.

It's not a "product", it's one of natures gifts, if we know how to use it. I know it as an aid to sleep. I have some arthritis so I try to establish its effects on joints. It can help alleviate pain but since no paid research can ascertain its benefits, I can't say how well it works for others. I consider it an important native plant of the south of England and continue to use it to its full benefit.

I have been harvesting wild mullein for almost a year. I started making teas with it, but recently I've been capsulating it.

I've had severe asthma and sinusitis for amost 16 years now - and taking the mullein leaf has allowed me to cut back on my inhaled steroids by 75%. I used to take 4 puffs a day of 110mcg Flovent - now I'm down to 1 puff a day. Hoping to quit the meds completely with additions of a plant-based diet along with my mullein.

What a wonderful plant God has blessed us with!

Hi, I suddenly started with an onset of adult asthma and my doctor put me on prednisone and oral steroids. I had a terrible reaction to prednisone and I desperately want to get out of it. I am slowly decreasing the amount and down to 2mg now and my cough and shortness of breath are coming back but I don't want to raise the dose again. Do you think I could take mullein with the prednisone and the inhalers and hopefully be able to get out of steroids little by little? Do you think there would be any drug interaction? I would really like to gradually switch to herbs!! Thanks!!!

My daughter has been suffering terribly from "allergies" so far in 2 1/2 months we've used 4 different antibiotics (originally for upper respiratory infection, now for ear infection") nebulizer treatments, flonase, singular... she's only 4! I'm looking for something that may get her off some of these meds... she has a cough that won't go away, worse at night. I've treated the house for dust mites and she is not around any smokers... would mullien work for her?. Is it safe for her age group? If so, what's the dose? She weighs about 35lbs..

Yes, it should be safe for her. I make a tea for my boys when they get sick or just to boost their lung strength in general in hopes of reducing chest issues. You can buy dried mullein from herb stores, Mountain Rose Herbs is a well-known one with high quality herbs but there are many others. Take a handful or so of the dried leaves and put in a jar or pot then add about a quart of boiling water and cover for 20 minutes up to 8 hours. The longer it sits, the stronger it will be. I usually flavor mine with some mint tea that I make separately (steeping for about 10 minutes only) and some honey. Occasionally I'll add other herbs for their situation. Nettles are wonderful for allergies but not the tastiest to children :) I add a small amount and hope the mint hides the flavor. She can drink 1/2 cup a few times a day. Really however much you can get her to take. The leaves have no known contraindications. Add to juice if she's not receptive to it as a tea. Make sure that you strain the mullein tea through a coffee filter or something similar otherwise the little hairs can "burn" the throat and are unpleasant but not dangerous. I make mine in a french press that I use for herbal teas or in a quart-size fillable tea bag.
