In more recent times, one of Mullein’s greatest advocates was Dr. John Christopher. He states, “It is the only herb known to man that has remarkable narcotic properties without being poisonous or harmful. It is a great herbal painkiller and nervous soporific, calming and quieting all inflamed and irritated nerves. In wasting diseases (such as tuberculosis or consumption), the weight steadily increases, expectoration becomes easy, cough calms, and the general condition is improved. Mullein soothes and strengthens the bowels and renal system, and is one of the most important for the glands and serous and mucous membranes. It stops the escape of fluids from ruptured vessels, and eliminates toxins.”

Mullein’s gentle nature makes it one of the very best herbs for use with children’s health problems. It combines wonderfully with Chamomile, Catnip, and Lemon Balm where appropriate, and can be used to address a wide variety of childhood diseases.

  • Excerpts from Nutritional Herbology

Mullein has a folk history of use that focuses on respiratory ailments. It has traditionally been used to treat coughs, colds, croup, bronchitis, and asthma. Because of its soothing nature, it has also been used to treat hemorrhoids, ulcers, and inflammatory skin disorders. The flowers and seeds contain an essential oil used to treat earaches. Mullein is considered the herb of choice of lung ailments.

Contain mucilaginous compounds that decrease the thickness and increase the production of mucosal fluids. These compounds also soothe inflamed tissues. Mullein also contains aromatic compounds that increase the flow of urine. The herb has been used to treat bronchitis, coughs, colds, hay fever, dysuria, nephritis and sinus congestion.

    From Our Reading and/or Experience...

    • We use Mullein in tea and tincture combinations. Of course, it can be used in many other types of remedies.
    • We specially like it in teas because of its very pleasant flavor. However, be sure to strain it properly to remove the potentially irritating hair-like particles.
    • Mullein can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing), children and animals.
    • It can be used as often as you would like, and in any way you choose.
    • As is the case with most herbs, Mullein should be stored in a dark, dry, and cool place.

There are two kinds of earache I know about. Inner ear infection and swimmers ear. My children, now adults, had both. Does this heal the infection or ease the pain of the infection?

I asked my doctor if I could find an herb that would help my lungs before he prescribes another inhaler. I had an allergic reation to an inhaler he had me using. He was ok with what I asked. This has been a miracle tea for me. I drink 3 cups a day. When it's warm I make iced tea. I've mixed it with other herb teas for different flavor or the herb benefit. It's great. I'll wake in the morning and feel the congestion. It's gone after the first cup. After lunch and dinner is when I drink the other two. I have an inhaler I use at bedtime that I plan on stopping. My doctor's appointment is in January 2009. I'm under his authority and I want him to see how I am doing before I stop using the inhaler.

I hope you get this comment because I am in desperate need of an anti inflammatory and anti congestion remedy for asthma without having to rely on prednisone all the time...I began an alternative remedy 3 weeks ago taking massive quantities of alfalfa, omega 3 capsules, beta carotene, b complex, flavanoids, cordyceps, ginseng, quercitin, etc, etc, while slowly reducing and eliminating, which worked for about 3 weeks then this week, something set me off again, maybe lots of pollen in the air, I don't know...but my chest is all congested again and wheezing. Please let me know how much of this mullein herb you used per cup of tea and if you used anything else to help remedy the congestion. thanks so much!

I just received my 1 lb order of mullein leaf cut an dried. I made a tea with it in my coffee maker and let it steep for while. It's made half my tongue turn quite numb after drinking about 1/2 cup. Are you sure there are just mullein leaves in here and is this effect normal and temporary. I hope so. Thanks.
