    Excerpts from The ABC Herbal

There are many strong-smelling (aromatic) herbs which have antiseptic and antibiotic qualities. These include tea tree oil (or its cousin cajeput), lemon oil, clove oil, thyme oil, pine oil and many others. We use tea tree oil (also known as melaleuca) as a topical antiseptic in our family. Most topical antiseptics (such as iodine, Mercurochrome, etc.) have been shown to damage healthy tissue as well as kill bacteria. Hence, they interfere with and slow the process of healing. This is not true of tea tree oil and many other volatile oils. These products have actually been demonstrated to speed tissue repair and healing while interfering with the growth of harmful microorganisms. My children will often go get the tea tree oil themselves to apply to a minor injury without my having to encourage them because it does not sting and they sense that it helps.

    Excerpts from Nutritional Herbology

It has been used to treat all kinds of skin ailments, cuts, burns, acne, cold sores and irritations of the mouth and throat. The oil is antiseptic and makes tea tree oil useful for various topical applications.
