Lavender has a wonderfully relaxing effect on the mind and body and makes a good remedy for anxiety, nervousness, and physical symptoms caused by stress such as tension headaches, migraine, palpitations, and insomnia. It also has a stimulating edge to it, acting as a tonic to the nervous system and restoring vitality to people suffering from nervous exhaustion. The relaxing effect of lavender can be felt in the digestive tract, where it soothes spasms and colic related to tension and relieves distension, flatulence, nausea, and indigestion, and enhances the appetite. As a tea, oil inhalation, or vapor rub, lavender is effective for colds, coughs, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, flu, tonsillitis, and laryngitis. A warm compress will relieve chest congestion, and help with bruises and insect bites. In a tea or tincture, it can also be taken for stomach and bowel infections causing vomiting or diarrhea. Hot lavender tea causes sweating and reduces fevers. It helps to detoxify the body by increasing elimination of toxins via the skin, and with its mild diuretic action, through the urine.

From Our Reading and/or Experience...

  • As a powder, we use Lavender in tincture combinations and capsules. Of course, it can be used in many other types of remedies. Except as a tea, as powders are not normally used in tea combinations.
  • It can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing), children and animals.
  • It can be used as often as you would like, and in any way you choose.
  • As is the case with most herbs, Lavender should be stored in a dark, dry, and cool place. Refrigeration or freezing is great, but certainly not necessary. Following these suggestions will delay the loss of its highly valued nutritional and medicinal properties.

Lavender flower powder bath
by Vilma on Aug 3, 2009  [ reply ]

My 1-1/2-year-old son developed a red buttom when he kept a dirty diaper on for too long. He woke up with it; not sure how long he had it for. He had loose bowel movements all day so this only got worse through the day. After wiping was no longer an option because just the site of the changing table would make him cry inconsolably, I opted for rinsing and then soaking. We had just gotten back to town from a vacation and I didn't know where the Lavender essential oil, which I don't leave home without, was. I opted to use the powder in his bath instead. I was surprised to see how nicely it mixed with the warm water. My son didn't like it at first mostly because of the color, I think, but eventually he didn't notice it. I continued to let him soak in a lavender bath after every diaper change and after just one day his bottom went back to its normal color.

I continue to use the lavender powder in his bath because he then got a small case of the sniffles. He sleeps well at night and is draining mucus, mostly clear, nicely through one nostril, has little to no congestion and is doing so well that I haven't even bothered with the humidifier. He might have some viral infection that gave him the mild diarrhea and cold. The lavender powder helped make sure this was no more than a mild case. I'll sure keep it in my "medicine cabinet" from now on.
