Excerpts from the book Nutritional Herbology

Kelp is employed by herbalists as a mineral supplement. It is especially prized for its iodine content, for which it is used to treat hypothyroidism and obesity.

Kelp has also been used as a blood purifier and to treat atherosclerosis and rheumatism. It functions in these conditions by absorbing toxins from the bowel. It is especially effective at absorbing the metabolic products produced by yeasts.

Kelp is most famous for its use in foods. In the Orient, it is used to flavor soups and sushi.

The medicinal virtues of kelp are primarily related to its content of viscous fiber called algin. Algin is responsible for the use of kelp in the treatment of obesity, atherosclerosis and as a blood purifier. Algin absorbs most nutrients as well as toxins from the digestive tract in much the same way that a water softener removes the "hardness" from tap water. This results in less toxins entering the circulatory system. It also reduces caloric intake.

Kelp contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance the detoxifying and eliminative functions of the digestive system. These compounds absorb toxins from the bowel and provide bulk to the stool. Kelp is an excellent herbal source of calcium, magnesium, sodium and iodine. Iodine is essential to normal thyroid function. It is used to increase the metabolic rate and strengthen connective tissues including the hair, skin and nails. Kelp has been used to treat hypothyroidism, enlarged glands, debility, fatigue, eczema, psoriasis, arthritis, and obesity.

Excerpt from the book Nourishing Traditions

Like all sea vegetables, kelp provides minerals found in sea water, especially iodine and trace minerals that may be lacking in our depleted soils. For Westerners unaccustomed to including seaweed in the diet, a small daily supplement of kelp in tablet or powdered form is a good idea, but don’t overdo – excess iodine may also cause thyroid problems.

Tid Bits You'll Want to Know:

Voice of Experience: Kelp has a distinct odor and flavor. Some folks love it. Others don't, but simply use it because of how effective it is for a number of conditions, such as: thyroid disorders, obesity, tumors, atherosclerosis, and rheumatism. Some use it as salt or with salt, as it has a salty flavor.

Uses: It's mostly used for internal applications in food recipes. It has a noticeable flavor so you may want to use it sparingly as you introduce it to newbies. Like many other bulk herbs, we add it to many dishes (salads, meat dishes, soups, stews, etc.) in small amounts for added nutrition. Kelp can be used to benefit men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing) and children. It can be used as often as you would like.

Storage: The nutrients in Kelp are very sensitive to air and light exposure. It should be kept in an airtight container and stored in a dark, dry, and cool place. Refrigeration or freezing is great but not necessary.

I love the Kelp Powder as I use it every morning at work - 1 Teaspoon - in my Black Bean Cereal. I love the taste of Seaweed and Kelp and it can be quite addicting in a healthy way! I find Kelp and Seaweed balances my insides and makes me feel calm. A fantastic natural product from Mother Nature!

  2. Not for disease treatment!

Various claims have been made that kelp can be used instead of synthroid for hypothyroidism treatment. When I tried substituting synthroid with at least 1 gr of kelp (in capsules) a few times per day for a couple of months, my TSH rose from 2.7 to 25 uIU/mL! Please do not do the same mistake! Keep kelp in the salt shaker where it belongs...

  3. I add kelp directly in my salt shaker.

I use it sometimes in place of salt. My children have gotten used to the odd color of the salt shaker. My family has a history of hypothyroid problems. I fortunately don't and I want it to stay that way. This is a great company to order from, nice, quick and easy.

  4. Thanks.
