Bulk Herbs: Henna leaf (red) - powder

Quantity:

Henna is best known as a natural dye for the hair. Our research has shown that henna not only colors hair, but its conditioning properties help bring body, life and vibrancy back to dry or damaged hair. Henna permeates the hair shaft to strengthen and enrich your hair, giving it a distinctive, natural radiance not found with chemical-based coloring. You also may want to try henna on fungal infections. The leaf contains the compound lawsone, which is active against many fungi and bacteria. Make a strong decoction by simmering five to seven teaspoons of henna per cup of water for about 20 minutes. Allow it to cool and apply the liquid to the affected area one to three times a day with a cotton ball or clean cloth.

From Our Reading and/or Experience...

  • Henna can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing), children and animals.
  • It can be used as often as you would like, and in any way you choose.
  • As is the case with most herbs, Henna should be stored in a dark, dry, and cool place.

Cover Gray
by Brenda on Jul 16, 2007  [ reply ]

Hi Joy,
When I used the henna, I put about 3-4 teaspoons in a little water and simmered it just a little. After this I let it cool down and smeared it all over my wet hair, left it on for an hour or two (went outside), and then rinsed it out, but washed my hair with shampoo the next day. The henna covered my gray strands (I do not use hair coloring because gray hair is a crown of glory as our sons quote from the Bible), so this was surprising along with my hair looking healthier. I am not sure how often you need to do this so let me know if you hear from others' suggestions.

Thank you and may God bless us in helping each other stay healthy.

I recently found this site and recently found your question from February of this year...and here it is December! So you may already have your answer by now. Once upon a time I was a natural redhead until it began to fade and the gray crept in. I have now been using henna leaf powder (make my own mix) to dye my hair for 2 or 3 years now. And I LOVE it! However, before I get started into a terribly long discourse, check out the website www.hennaforhair.com if you don't yet have answers to your questions. It is very, very informational.

I have used henna for years and now that I am very grey and it still works.
I never knew about the lemon juice mix so use 1/4 cup of henna pwdr and enough very hot water to make a smooth cream. As soon as its cool but still warm, I apply it to my hair and leave on for an hour. However, this time I will try the lemon - henna mix and let it set overnight before applying it.
While it does leave a gritty grung in my hair, I stand under a shower until it feels clear rubbing my hair and scalp to help clean it then shampoo and that takes care of the grit some people complain about.
However, the way I've been doing it works just fine and I only have to use it to color once a month but can get by waiting 6 weeks if have to.
