Disinformation: After getting educated on the dangers of unfiltered tap water, the folks at Disinformation.com tried out various water filters to see how they performed. The results: They frowned on bottled water, praised an under-sink model, and our Big Berkey Water Filter received "the official disinformation endorsement."
Imperfect Homemaker: MaryEllen was struggling with various sicknesses with heavy-metal toxicity as the root cause, or at least adding insult to injury. On well water, she was at least free of the known carcinogens, chlorine and flouride. But well water is notorious for heavy metals. Having heard from friends in Brazil of how much they liked their Big Berkey, and from her own research, MaryEllen is now the proud owner of one of our Big Berkeys. She gives it a 5 stars rating based on performance and price.
Walk Slowly Live Wildly: After years of "reading, researching and learning", Sara finally decided to buy one of our Big Berkey water filters. The water went from tasting and smelling like chlorine to being "yummy".
Inspired Taste: Adam and Joanne have been concerned for years about the contaminants in their water because of the old pipes that supply their house. That was what initially attracted them to our Big Berkey. They didn't expect to instantly fall in love with the taste of the water.

Drinking more water daily has been clearly proven to have a noticeably positive impact on overall health. But when you are drinking unfiltered tap water, the amount of pollutants taxing your liver and kidneys are staggering, and ultimately compromising your health. Bottled water regularly makes headlines as being nothing more than city water bottled up with a pretty label.
Drinking water was typically polluted with viruses, parasites, pathogenic bacteria, cysts, and the usual heavy metals, such as lead and mercury. Municipalities treat water for such contaminents with marginal to moderate success. However, treated water is often found to have excessive levels of chlorine and fluoride, and there is an increasing amount of research proving that these chemicals do more harm than good (it's like choosing between two evils).
To make matters worse, municipalities accross the U.S. are finding unprecedented levels of pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals in water. The list of pollutants commonly found in drinking water seems to just keep growing. Pesticides, MTBE, trihalomenthanes, nitrates, herbicides, VOCs, radon 222, organic solvents, and the list goes on.
Our Big Berkey's driving factor IS the quality of the resulting water because it can remove ALL the pollutants mentioned on this page and some. A few of the added benefits are the fact that they are quite portable, and use no electricity or water pressure. The elements are cleanable, and last a number of years. Oh, and here is something NO OTHER filtering system on the market can do, filter water from a lake, pond, swimming pool, etc. That's right, our Royal Berkeys produce the highest quality water regardless of the source (except for salt water).
For over 14 years now, our family has used and sold Berkeys, and love them. Give us a call or e-mail us, and we'll be glad to talk with you about them. Oh, and check out the FAQ Page, and the reviews below for more insight into these top-of-the-line filters.

In response to Amon's comment that the Berkey removes fluoride, it should be pointed out that the standard filters actually do not. Berkey does offer additional filters that expand the system's capabilities to do this. Both types of filters must be used to accomplish this.
Also, to quote Dr. Dean Dean Burk, Chief Chemist Emeritus for the National Cancer Institute, "...fluoride causes more cancer death, and causes it faster, than any other chemical."

Sally, I have the Berkey light for about 2 years now and I'm getting the Berkey Imperial. I have a son with autism and I'm trying to reduce every and all plastic use. Also my B.L. have been getting mildew spots here and there in the lower chamber and with the plastic you have to be really careful what you clean it with not to scratch it. Other than that I liked it a lot. You can see the water clearly which is a plus. The main reason for the switch is the higher capacity. I used the filtered water for cooking and drinking and the B.L. is just not enough for our family.

My husband bought us the BB several years ago and we don't use any other water. We even travel with it. Now that I've seen a few comments, I wonder if we are to be concerned about the "plastic" containers? Also, we have the extra filters that reduce the flouride...can they be used in the larger Berkey units.

Has anyone had trouble with their black filters coming apart from the plastic bottom? When I take them out to clean them the plastic bottom falls off and then the filter leaks and is no good.

Yes. After a couple months, the black elements came apart at the seals, which leaked into the lower chamber. Luckily I was only filtering my tap water, which is not bad, but it have a strange taste. Apparently there was a bad batch regarding the adhesive used. I contacted the seller and had my elements replaced by the manufacturer. I haven't had problems since.

The product doesn't appear to have third party, independant laboratory certification for removal of the more severe contaminants like bacteria and viruses. Whether its limited for application on microbiologically safe influent water is my concern. If so, a simple, inexpensive Brita Pitcher would be equivalent for much less expense.

this technology is over a 100 years old. designed for filtering filthy rotten victorian london thames water yuk. the SUPER STERASYL ceramic filters can be taken out after a few months and cleaned..go on you tube to see cleaning ceramic filter videos simple cleaning the outer ceramic wall will help with flow rates as well. in some cases it will get you an extra 6 months of life. having a simple pre water filter to get large particles out of the tap water will also help.

The water is so bad at my place, that when I set up the berkey, my landlord claimed the water tasted "bland". Goodness! He was so used to the bad water, he couldn't believe the water was so good.
The shipping took a long time, but that was because it was back ordered. No wonder, because it is so effective.

Brita does not filter fluoride. The ability to filter fluoride itself is worth the cost unless, you are into chemicals.

We have found it easy to use and clean, and very economical. We love the fluoride filters you can use with it also.

I've had my Big Berkey for almost two weeks; best water I've ever tasted and will never be w/o it.
My only complaint is with the base. The spigot lies at the bottom of the base so that you have to allow the entire unit to sit right on the edge of your counter top in order to draw water. Often, a drop or two of water ends up on the floor beneath so I usually take a paper towel and blot the end of the spigot when I'm done. Annoying.
I'll probably make a base for the unit that will allow me to draw a glass w/o having the unit so close to the edge of the counter top but an optional elevated base would look nicer.

I am a registered nurse who worked in the ED during the cryptosporidium outbreak in Milwaukee.I own the big berkey with 4 elements. Any Questions?

As a user, the thing that separates this series of filters from the crowd to me is the ability to clean the filters very easily and re-use them. Yes, the initial investment cost me more than my Brita countertop unit we had been using but I've now been using the filters which shipped with my unit for almost 2 years and they continue to do their job well with just a few cleanings. In other words, you will make back the initial investment and much more over time.

I got the Big Berkey a little over a month ago because a friend recommended it. I have hideous well water so full of iron and minerals that we couldn't drink it and the smell coming out of the tap turns your stomach. The Big Berkey makes that awful well water into really great water and we can now enjoy our water. I had the Culligan man come and remove his reverse osmosis system and figure the Big Berkey will pay for itself in just a few short months.

i bought this filter years ago because the water pipes in my old house were very rusty & the water tasted nasty. i've since replaced the rusty galvanized pipes with PVC, but am so used to using the filter, that i continue to use it. the water is not 'dirty' as in the rough, so the filters have lasted a very long time between changes. i use filtered water for drinking, cooking and making ice. have never had a complaint with the Big Berkey....owner since 1997.

We are a family of five heavy water drinkers so I bought 4 filters. The water is wonderful and the filters work great. Fast enough for us. We tried various different water purifiers before but this one is the best. And the price is excellent. Thanks!

We just got our Big Berkey for our very treated city water, and let me tell you, it has just been awesome! We got the Black Berkey filters and the PF-2 Fluoride reduction filters and are so happy with them! The instructions that came with the system were great and priming was a snap (although I did spray a little water in my kitchen!). I would recommend this system to anyone, no matter what type of water you have. Thanks so such a great product!

We love our Big Berkey. It's been with our family for 2 years now. I don't know how we ever made it without it.
