Big Berkey Water Filter (05:04)
http://www.morethanalive.com/Big-BerkeyThe Big Berkey is a stainless steel water filter in the Berkey Water Filter line. It can use up to 4 filters, which can filter up to 7 gallons per hour, and holds 2.25 gallons of water. The 2 Black Berkey filters that ship with it can purify up to 6,000 gallons.

Product Description

  • Our Big Berkey is available with your choice of 2 or 4 9 inch Ceramic Elements OR Black Berkey Elements. The differences between these elements are marginal but we prefer the Ceramic elements for their historically longer, service-free life.
  • Big Berkeys can filter water at a rate of up to 3.5 gallons per hour using 2 Elements, and 7 gallons per hour using 4 elements. Granted, you'd have to keep the top chamber topped off in order to achieve such fast rates but it can be done.
  • The bottom chamber of our Big Berkey  holds up to 2.25 gallons of ready-for-use water. If you consume more than that amount per day, you may want to consider 4 filtering elements rather than 2 or a larger system.
  • Our Big Berkey is made of polished stainless steel (304), and stands 19.25 inches tall and is 8.5 inches wide. Packed up and ready for travel, it is only 13 inches tall.
  • Shipping is FREE via UPS Ground - SIGNATURE REQUIRED (please let us know if the required signature is unacceptable)

Independent Reviews of our Big Berkey

Disinformation: After getting educated on the dangers of unfiltered tap water, the folks at Disinformation.com tried out various water filters to see how they performed. The results: They frowned on bottled water, praised an under-sink model, and our Big Berkey Water Filter received "the official disinformation endorsement."

Imperfect Homemaker: MaryEllen was struggling with various sicknesses with heavy-metal toxicity as the root cause, or at least adding insult to injury. On well water, she was at least free of the known carcinogens, chlorine and flouride. But well water is notorious for heavy metals. Having heard from friends in Brazil of how much they liked their Big Berkey, and from her own research, MaryEllen is now the proud owner of one of our Big Berkeys. She gives it a 5 stars rating based on performance and price.

Walk Slowly Live Wildly: After years of "reading, researching and learning", Sara finally decided to buy one of our Big Berkey water filters. The water went from tasting and smelling like chlorine to being "yummy".

Inspired Taste: Adam and Joanne have been concerned for years about the contaminants in their water because of the old pipes that supply their house. That was what initially attracted them to our Big Berkey. They didn't expect to instantly fall in love with the taste of the water.

Hydration through daily consumption of water has been scientifically established to have a progressive effect on an individual’s complete health. However, consuming unclean water directly from the faucet could mean bombarding your liver and kidneys with a lot of toxins that will inevitably endanger your well-being. Even bottled water is notorious as city water disguised with an expensive brand name.

A lot of precautions must be taken before people are allowed to consuming water. With poisonous elements (such as mercury and led) and pollutants (such as deadly bacteria, parasites, viruses and cysts) contaminating drinking water, cities and communities have taken drastic efforts to protect their citizens. However, these efforts have born little success. Even filtered water contains extreme levels of fluoride and chlorine, which based on the vast amounts of current research about these chemicals, could be even deadlier. In the end, you are only forced to choose the lesser evil.

To rub more salt to the wound, communities and cities all over the United States are now discovering extraordinary levels of chemicals and even pharmaceutical in their drinking water. Organic solvents, pesticides, herbicides, MTBE, VOCs, trihalomethanes and Radon 222 are just few of the pollutants that are commonly found in water and the number of these poisons just keeps on increasing.

The driving factor of Big Berkey is the quality of drinking water they produce since it has the ability to eliminate all the pollutants previously mentioned and even more. One particular benefit is their portability, having a need for neither electricity nor water pressure. The parts are very easy to clean and are durable enough to last for years. The best thing about Royal Berkey, which other filtering systems can’t do, is its capability to filter water from ponds, lakes and even the swimming pool. Berkey provides water of the highest quality no matter its source.

It’s been 14 years since our family used and even sold Berkey, and we just absolutely love them. So if you’re interested, you can contact us through phone call or e-mail and we’ll be more than happy to discuss the product with you in detail. If you need more evidence, read through the FAQ page and study the reviews to provide you more insight about filters.

  1. Big Berkey

Posted by cliff on 10th Aug 2014

I have purified over 50 gals of water since buying my Big Berkey. No way will you get 3.5 gallons per hour. I get around 1.2 gals an hour which is no big deal, except misleading information. Yes I primed the filters twice. Even used the red dye test.

  2. They work...

this technology is over a 100 years old. designed for filtering filthy rotten victorian london thames water yuk. the SUPER STERASYL ceramic filters can be taken out after a few months and cleaned..go on you tube to see cleaning ceramic filter videos simple cleaning the outer ceramic wall will help with flow rates as well. in some cases it will get you an extra 6 months of life. having a simple pre water filter to get large particles out of the tap water will also help.

  3. Good product

My husband bought us the BB several years ago and we don't use any other water. We even travel with it. Also, we have the extra filters that reduce the fluoride.

  4. Fluoride is a carcinogen

Posted by Royce on 13th Dec 2013

In response to Amon's comment below that the Berkey removes fluoride, it should be pointed out that the standard filters actually do not. Berkey does offer additional filters that expand the system's capabilities to do this. Both types of filters must be used to accomplish this.

Also, to quote Dr. Dean Burk, Chief Chemist Emeritus for the National Cancer Institute, "...fluoride causes more cancer death, and causes it faster, than any other chemical."

  5. The water goes from smelling like a rusty swimming pool to clean pure water.

Posted by Thomas on 9th Nov 2013

The water is so bad at my place, that when I set up the berkey, my landlord claimed the water tasted "bland". Goodness! He was so used to the bad water, he couldn't believe the water was so good.

The shipping took a long time, but that was because it was back ordered. No wonder, because it is so effective.

  6. The Berkey filters fluoride from tap water.

Posted by Amon on 1st Nov 2013

Brita does not filter fluoride. The ability to filter fluoride itself is worth the cost unless, you are into chemicals.

  7. We have a Big Berkey and LOVE it!

Posted by Unknown on 28th Oct 2013

We have found it easy to use and clean, and very economical. We love the fluoride filters you can use with it also.

  8. Only ONE drawback...

Posted by Alex on 15th Oct 2013

I've had my Big Berkey for almost two weeks; best water I've ever tasted and will never be w/o it.

My only complaint is with the base. The spigot lies at the bottom of the base so that you have to allow the entire unit to sit right on the edge of your counter top in order to draw water. Often, a drop or two of water ends up on the floor beneath so I usually take a paper towel and blot the end of the spigot when I'm done. Annoying.

I'll probably make a base for the unit that will allow me to draw a glass w/o having the unit so close to the edge of the counter top but an optional elevated base would look nicer.

  9. Buy one for you and your family.

I am a registered nurse who worked in the ED during the cryptosporidium outbreak in Milwaukee.I own the big berkey with 4 elements. Any Questions?

  10. The water purity is fantastic!

Posted by Steve on 12th Oct 2013

As a user, the thing that separates this series of filters from the crowd to me is the ability to clean the filters very easily and re-use them. Yes, the initial investment cost me more than my Brita countertop unit we had been using but I've now been using the filters which shipped with my unit for almost 2 years and they continue to do their job well with just a few cleanings. In other words, you will make back the initial investment and much more over time.

  11. Great water

Posted by Kathy on 12th Oct 2013

I got the Big Berkey a little over a month ago because a friend recommended it. I have hideous well water so full of iron and minerals that we couldn't drink it and the smell coming out of the tap turns your stomach. The Big Berkey makes that awful well water into really great water and we can now enjoy our water. I had the Culligan man come and remove his reverse osmosis system and figure the Big Berkey will pay for itself in just a few short months.

  12. very happy

Posted by Sheila on 11th Oct 2013

i bought this filter years ago because the water pipes in my old house were very rusty & the water tasted nasty. i've since replaced the rusty galvanized pipes with PVC, but am so used to using the filter, that i continue to use it. the water is not 'dirty' as in the rough, so the filters have lasted a very long time between changes. i use filtered water for drinking, cooking and making ice. have never had a complaint with the Big Berkey....owner since 1997.

  13. Amazing system.

Posted by Unknown on 11th Oct 2013

We are a family of five heavy water drinkers so I bought 4 filters. The water is wonderful and the filters work great. Fast enough for us. We tried various different water purifiers before but this one is the best. And the price is excellent. Thanks!

  14. Works fabulously!

Posted by Lawrence & Lena on 8th Jul 2013

We just got our Big Berkey for our very treated city water, and let me tell you, it has just been awesome! We got the Black Berkey filters and the PF-2 Fluoride reduction filters and are so happy with them! The instructions that came with the system were great and priming was a snap (although I did spray a little water in my kitchen!). I would recommend this system to anyone, no matter what type of water you have. Thanks so such a great product!

  15. Great product
